Tokara Reserve Collection Syrah has won the trophy as the best red wine overall at the inaugural Southern Hemisphere tasting of the Intercontinental Wine Challenge 2023. Tokara also struck Gold with the Director’s Reserve White.
The only South African trophy winner, the 2020 vintage of the Reserve Collection Syrah stood out in the diverse line-up of top tier wines from Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. The premier international competition holds tastings across different continents in celebration of the finest wines from around the world. In addition to the trophy for the best red wine overall, South Africa swept the board with four Double Gold medals, while two Double Golds were awarded to Chile, and one to Australia.
The expressive Tokara Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Syrah 2020, is a fine example of a classically styled, single vineyard wine that melds the best of old and new world attributes. The nose leads with notes of purple fig, cigar box, salted liquorice and violet perfume all continuing to a classy, refined silky palate with rich dark fruit and an appealing chalky finish with a subtle hint of red pepper kernels.
The flagship Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2021 is a classic Cape Bordeaux-style Sauvignon blanc/Semillon blend made from grapes on the highest slopes of the Simonsberg. The wine has amazing clarity and depth. Passionfruit and pink grapefruit intermingle with hints of blackcurrant and freshly toasted brioche. It is full and rich with a zesty persistence.
The forward thinking vision of owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira to produce world class Tokara wines without compromise and with a distinct South African identity, is the foundation on which this prestigious Stellenbosch property builds its prowess vintage after vintage.
